Palmerston North’s Glen Williams made it 10 wins from 10 starts at Manfeild at the weekend, raising the question “can anyone beat this man on his vintage bike?”

Williams scored another brace of wins in the Post Classic senior pre-89 class at the weekend’s fourth round of the Victoria Motorcycle Club’s popular Actrix Winter Series, putting him a commanding 86 points clear of Feilding’s Murray Cross (Yamaha) with just two rounds remaining.

“I’m just loving this series,” said the 46-year-old Williams. “The bike, a 1989-model FZR1000, may be an old timer but it’s still a great machine.

“The annual Tri Series (which kicks off at Hampton Downs, near Meremere, in December) will have a class for ‘posties’ (post classic bikes) this season, so I’m looking forward to racing it in there as well.

“I will defend my national formula three crown but being able to ride the FZR in the post classics class in the Tri Series is a very exciting prospect for me.”

So impressive has Williams been through the Actrix Winter Series that he shattered the previous lap record for bikes of this era at round three, his time quicker than that set by now-retired Kiwi superstar Aaron Slight.

“I can’t take all the credit though,” said a modest Williams. “I suppose with modern tyres and modern suspension, I have an advantage over Aaron, who set his time when these bikes were current models. It just goes to show, though, that these bikes are still very competitive.”
