The 250SX story coming into Philadelphia was simple: New Zealand’s Cole Davies needed just a small points gain over Seth Hammaker to secure the supercross championship title.
But from the outset at this ninth round the United States 250cc East Coast Supercross series, it was clear both riders had no intention of settling.
Hammaker, racing in front of a home crowd, came out firing in qualifying, topping both sessions and laying down the only lap in the 48-second bracket, half a second clear of Waitoki man Davies (pictured here).
The championship leader responded with second overall, using his strength through the whoops to stay within range, while Daxton Bennick slotted into third ahead of last week’s winner, Nate Thrasher.
In heat one, Nick Romano grabbed control early and held off late pressure to take his first ever heat win, while Thrasher’s charge ended in the whoops after a late crash. Davies, dealing with a poor start and some wayward roll-offs in his goggles, fought through to third, limiting any early damage.
Heat two belonged to Hammaker. After quickly dispatching early leader Ryder Floyd, he checked out to an astonishing 30-second victory, stamping himself as the rider to beat heading into the main event. Bennick followed him home in second, with Izaih Clark third.
Both title contenders launched well as the gates on the final dropped, with Hammaker and Davies running first and second on the opening lap. But within seconds, everything changed.
Hammaker hit a kicker in the opening rhythm section and was sent over the bars, dropping him to dead last and handing the initiative straight to Davies.
From there, Davies took control.
He moved into the lead on lap one and, even after a red flag restart bunched the field back together, never looked threatened.
Calm, composed and precise in the deteriorating conditions, he controlled the race from start to finish to claim his fifth win of the season, and with it, the 2026 250SX Eastern Divisional Championship.
Behind him, Bennick delivered one of his best rides of the year. Navigating the tricky track with smart line choices, he secured a season-best second place, fending off a hard-charging Hammaker in the closing stages.
After his opening-lap crash, the Kawasaki rider charged back through the field, and the red flag restart offered a lifeline, bunching the pack and giving him another shot at the podium. By the final lap, he had worked his way into third and was pressuring Bennick for second, a position that would have delayed Davies’ title celebrations.
Pushing for that pass, Hammaker tipped over late and had to settle for third. It was a gritty recovery ride, but not enough to stop Davies from sealing the championship.
Behind the podium, Coty Schock impressed with a fourth-place finish after coming through the LCQ and running in podium contention for much of the race, while Thrasher rounded out the top five.
Reflecting on his title-winning night, Davies said the championship “means everything to me and my family,” adding that “we’ve sacrificed everything to come over here and race in the US.” He continued, “all the hard work, the ups and downs, it’s all worth it now. This track was treacherous, but we got it done. A dream come true.”
Meanwhile, round 15 of the 2026 Monster Energy Supercross Championship at Lincoln Field delivered decisive moments in both classes, with Ken Roczen taking victory to move into the 450SX championship lead after a dramatic night in wet conditions.
German Suzuki rider Roczen capitalised on a key night in wet, deteriorating conditions to take victory and the championship lead.
Australian Hunter Lawrence led early after a holeshot but crashed mid-race and dropped to third, while Cooper Webb finished second as Roczen moved four points clear in the standings.
The Championship makes its next stop in Denver next weekend for the penultimate round of the 2026 season for the 450cc class.
