Just for a comparison to this year’s event, let’s look at some of the highlights from the 2018 Motocross of Nations at RedBud, in Michigan, when the “Olympic Games of Motocross” was previously run in the United States.
Team France made it five Motocross of Nations (MXoN) trophy wins in a row that year, despite all the pre-race team selection controversy and despite the fact that they weren’t racing on familiar European turf.
The Dutch trio probably should have won the event, but, when an eye injury forced their MX2 rider Calvin Vlaandren to withdraw, it left them in a tight spot.
Even so, thanks to Dutch MXGP class rider Jeffery Herlings finishing 1-2 in his two races and Dutch Open class rider Glenn Coldenhoff finishing 1-1 in his two races, The Netherlands were still centre of attention at the event.
Team Italy had finished in the runner-up spot at the 2018 MXoN, but they were then disqualified – three months later, in January of the following year – after illegal fuel was discovered in the bike of one of their riders (Michele Cervellin).
This dropped Italy from second overall to 30th and last in the classification.
The Netherlands were therefore promoted to second overall and we saw that the Dutch riders were a potent force the following year too, winning the 2019 MXoN (for the first time in history) when the event was hosted on their home turf at Assen.
Team New Zealand in 2018 – Cody Cooper, Hamish Harwood and Rhys Carter – finished 17th (after the rankings adjustment following Italy’s disqualification for fuel violations).
