LEWIS AT THE RING
Rangiora road-race ace Jake Lewis is living the dream, racing at the ultimate level of the sport in Europe.
The 2012 New Zealand 600cc superstock champion reports in from the Nurburgring GP circuit in Germany.
“My first session Friday morning at the Nurburgring … wow what a track, I loved it from my first lap, managing to drop my lap times with every lap finishing the first session with a 2.09.1, a little way to go to the 600 super stock lap record of 2.03.3 but I couldn’t wait for qualifying one.
“The weather was perfect and just needed to get in amongst the madness of the pack and try and stay with some really quick guys for as long as I could, I dropped my times down into the low 2.07s before putting on a new tyre for the last 10 mins, a 2.06.9, was happy with this but still in 24th just one second off 15th.
“Saturday morning qualifying two, I knew I had to push that much harder to get inside the top 20 at least, it was a really fierce session but could only manage 2.06.7 and 25th.
“I really enjoyed the sessions on this track, an amazing place to ride, down the hills over the back of the circuit then through turn 12, flat in 6th gear real heart in the mouth corner just about on every lap but was really enjoyable.
“Saturday night 6pm, lining up for the race, needing to get a good start and hang on to the pack, I rode round four riders in the first five turns and then got t-boned by one of them and it pushed me out wide on turn seven which put me to the back.
“I just rode as hard as I could to stay in touch getting to my best time of a 2.06.5 as the leaders just got into the high 2.02s. I was happy to finish 20th on my first visit to the Ring and really hope I can come back to this awesome place next year doing a full championship.
“Thank you very much again to team Racedays Kawasaki, Gerry, Andy and Jolt for all their hard work and all the sharp new body work for my bike, and a really big thanks to my dad (former New Zealand roadrace champion Rob Lewis) and all my supporters for making this possible.”
