Gisborne’s Matt Hunt is on the prowl again.

The multiple New Zealand motocross champion has been sidelined with injury for much of the past two seasons, but now fully recovered and with a new bike prepped and ready, the 20-year-old is poised to resume racing again.

He’s just picked up his new Yamaha YZ250, meaning he is also now back with the brand he knows and trusts so well … it was with Yamaha that he enjoyed his greatest success, winning five New Zealand junior motocross titles and two New Zealand junior supercross titles, making him one of the country’s most successful junior motocross stars of all time.

“I wanted a Yamaha YZ250 two-stroke bike because I just love riding two-strokes. And there’s so little maintenance involved in these bikes.

“It produces lots of power stock standard too … just look at how Darryll King won the New Zealand Championship title in the MX2 class on a YZ250 this season. He proved how good these bikes are.

“It’s a lot of fun if you know how to ride them.

“I won a few junior titles but I’ve been ranked as a senior these past few years … I just need to see if I can step it up and get some race wins in the senior races now.

“The big Michael Godfrey Memorial Motocross in a few weeks’ time will be my first big race back.

“This will be my first big race since last July. I know I’m on the pace. It will just be a matter now of getting up to full fitness. I’m riding the bike as much as I can at the moment.”
