The chances of Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey defending his Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship took a huge dive at Anaheim II on Saturday night.

Dungey failed to finish the main event when his bike’s drive chain derailed, leaving it to his rivals to fight for the points.

Yamaha’s James Stewart won the race, finishing ahead of Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, stretching his lead to five points over Villopoto at the top of the standings.

Australian Chad Reed (Honda) finished third at Anaheim, placing the former champion third in the championship standings.

Dungey has slipped from third to fifth spot.

Meanwhile, Kawasaki’s Josh Hansen got back into winning ways – this time winning ahead of Honda’s Eli Tomac — to add another win to his impressive credentials in the Lites class. Hansen is now eight points clear of Kawasaki team-mate Broc Tickle at the top of the rankings.

Even a broken finger could not halt the progress of Hansen.

Despite breaking his left pinky finger in practice, Hansen won his third Western Regional Supercross Lites class main event and extended his championship points lead.

Hansen, Tomac and Ken Roczen (KTM) carved their way through turn one with just centimetres separating them to start the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class main event. On lap two, Roczen moved around Tomac, but five laps later, Tomac returned to the number-two position.

Tomac and Hansen traded places for the lead on lap 10 before Hansen used an aggressive move to secure the lead and ride to his third race win of the season. Tomac finished second and Roczen finished third, marking the first podium of his career.
