Popular Liechtenstein’s racer Horst Saiger is ‘critical but stable’ following crash during a test session at Red Bull Ring in Austria.
Regular North West 200, Isle of Man TT and Macau Grand Prix racer – and a former winner of New Zealand’s Suzuki Series (which includes the famous Cemetery Circuit races on Boxing Day each year) – is in an induced coma.
The likeable 49-year-old came off at the Red Bull Ring, with a statement issued from Saiger Racing revealing that the crash occurred when his brakes failed.
“Because of his numerous injuries, he is in an artificial coma. He is in a critical but stable condition,” the statement said.
“He needs time and we have to wait and hope that everything goes well. Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed and your positive thoughts.”
The statement was written on behalf of his partner Tamara and three sons.
Saiger won the Suzuki Series in New Zealand in 2014, finishing that year ahead of Taupo’s Scott Moir and Whakatane’s Tony Rees.
Saiger also finished third in the Suzuki Series in 2015, behind Wellington’s Sloan Frost and Rees, and he finished overall runner-up to Rees in 2016.
