We here at BikesportNZ.com take literally thousands of photos at the dozens of events we travel to, but, the shame is, most never see the light of day.
The other shame is that there’s no racing at the moment because of the Coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown, so no chance to add to our vast library.
Therefore, we have decided to trawl through our archives and dig out some of those shots that either have never been seen before or simply that rate among our favourites and deserve a second viewing … we are calling it our “Blast From The Past” and we may make it a regular feature, even after this virus thing blows over.
Among the photos featured here are a handful of New Zealand motocross and supercross heroes from the 1980s and 90s … and not all of them are Kiwis either … appearing here at two big supercross events in New Zealand in 1989, the first at the Supercross circuit at Amisfield in Tokoroa, in January of that year and the other at Carlaw Park in Auckland in December 1989.
See if you can identify the individuals pictured and perhaps visit us on Facebook to lodge your comments.

Here’s an interview that BikesportNZ.com conducted with visiting American rider “Wild” Willie Surratt, winner of the 250cc class at that Tokoroa Supercross on January 21, 1989. And, just eight days later, Surratt also went on to win the main trophy at the New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville.
