STEWART SUSPENDED
The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) has advised United States Supercross rider James Stewart that he is provisionally suspended pursuant to Article 7.6 of the FIM Anti-doping Code.
The decision to provisionally suspend Mr Stewart was taken following the receipt of a report from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in Cologne indicating an Adverse Analytical Finding of Amphetamine in a urine sample collected from him at an in-competition test carried out by the FIM at the round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship held at the Century Link Field, Seattle, Washington, on 12 April 2014.
The FIM ruling reads: “Mr Stewart has the right to request and attend the analysis of his B sample.
“A Provisional Suspension imposed by the FIM does not in any way prejudge the question as to whether an anti-doping rule violation under Article 2 of the FIM Anti-Doping Code has actually been committed.
“This question will be addressed by the FIM International Disciplinary Court (CDI) when it adjudicates on the merits of the case.
“Mr James Stewart is provisionally suspended with effect from 20 June until further notice.”
Under the World Anti-Doping Code and the FIM Anti-Doping Code, the FIM is unable to provide any additional information at this time.
Stewart reported to his team that he learned of the failed test June 17. According to Stewart via a team release issued Friday, the positive result was triggered by a medicine prescribed by his physician to help treat a long-term condition.
Stewart finished fourth overall when the Supercross series wrapped up May 5.
Stewart, who became the first African-American to win a major auto-racing title when he won the first of two AMA Supercross crowns in 2007, won again in 2009.
He won world titles in 2006 and 2007.
He currently is competing in the AMA Motocross series, which travels to the Tennessee National in Blountville, Tenn., on June 28. According to the team release, Stewart plans to attend that event.
