VILLOPOTO EXTENDS LEAD
Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto has boosted his advantage in the 2014 Monster Energy Supercross Championships in the United States after winning the 10th round of 17 in the series on the infield of the Daytona Speedway at the weekend.
The win was Villopoto’s fourth at Daytona in the last five years and it put him within one win of Ricky Carmichael’s career win record at the legendary facility.
“I was able to get our front and just ride my own laps,” said Villopoto. “The track was tough, and you had to pick good lines and be smart with where you were going.”
But it was Scotsman Dean Wilson who fired his Kawasaki KX450F into the lead when the gates dropped on the night’s main event. It did not take Villopoto long to take control of the race however, moving into the lead by the second corner.
A small crash mid way through the race did not affect Villopoto who had a comfortable 18-second lead at the time, with championship leader re-mounting his bike, going on to win what is considered the toughest supercross race of the season by 12 seconds.
KTM riders Ken Roczen and Ryan Dungey filled the podium positions finishing second and third respectively.
Villopoto now has a 28-point lead in the championship standings over Dungey, with Roczen a further point further back in third.
In the 250SX East main event, Blake Baggett led a Monster Energy, Pro Circuit clean sweep of the podium, leading home team-mate and championship leader Adam Cianciarulo in second and Martin Davalos in third.
Cianciarulo currently holds a seven point lead over Davalos, with Baggett sitting third in the standings eight points further back after four of nine rounds in the East Regional championship
