It’s history now that the North King Country Motorcycle Club have now made it two times consecutively that they’ve won the big annual Battle Of The Clubs motocross in Taupo.
Saturday’s 15th annual Motocross of Nations (MXoN) fundraiser event was another superb display of high-class racing, coupled with top-grade spirit and unbounded camaraderie, the key aim being to scoop together a few dollars to help send a Kiwi representation to this year’s MXoN in the United Kingdom.
The yet-to-be-named Kiwi contingent that will head to this year’s event, set for Winchester in England in October, will certainly be grateful for the more than $10,000 that was raised on Saturday.
The Battle of the Clubs (BOTC) event in Taupo at the weekend was slightly less glamourous and marginally less significant than the international “Olympic Games of Motocross” on which it was based, but the racing witnessed was top notch.
The winning six-rider junior/senior team at the BOTC this year was the one representing the North King Country Motorcycle Club and this comprised former New Zealand MXoN team riders Maximus Purvis and James Scott, sharing duties with experienced veteran racer Joel Hansen and talented juniors Nixon and Maz Parkes, riding alongside young rising star Harry Daly.
But, when all was said and done, this club didn’t have everything go its way and there were several other individuals who also produced outstanding rides at Taupo.
Best of the MX1 class riders was Purvis, with 1-1 race scores in the MX1 class; best of the MX2 riders was Whangarei Motorcycle Club rider Seth Morrow, with 2-9 results; best of the veteran riders was Tauranga Motorcycle Club rider Peter Broxholme, with 8-6 results.
Best of the Junior 250cc riders was Pukekohe Motorcycle Club rider Hayden Draper, with 4-1 results; best of the Junior 125cc riders was Maz Parkes, with 1-4 results, and best of the Junior 85cc riders was Tauranga Motorcycle Club rider Arama Te Whetu, with 15-8 results.
