After years of near misses, Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Eli Tomac finally broke the jinx and managed to win the 2020 AMA 450 supercross championships title.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna riders finished 1-2-3 at the 17th and final round of this United States series in Utah yesterday, but Tomac’s finishing fifth in the main event was enough for him to snatch the crown.
Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne passed early leader and Husqvarna team-mate Jason Anderson to win the main event, while Anderson lost his seat during the main event and this forced himn to hand over the lead to his team-mate to finish second. Another Husky rider, Scotsman Dean Wilson, finished in third place.
Major contender Ken Roczen (Honda) finished seventh, and fellow title hopeful and defending champion Cooper Webb (KTM) was eight, while retiring veteran Australian hero Chad Reed wound up 10th.
In the 250cc East versus West, it was Chase Sexton and Dylan Ferrandis who won, after red flag restarts and major crashes cost their main challengers.
In the 250 shootout Austin Forkner looked likely to win the West Coast championship and Shane Mcelrath led the race and was looking a good bet to win the East Coast, when Forkner went down hard and forced a red flag restart. With Forkner out of the race, the title was the Frenchman’s and, in the restart, Sexton ruled the roost and won the main event and retained his East Coast championship.
