MICHELE RINALDI
My heroes, a source of inspiration
The Citadel in Namur, one of Europe’s largest castles, a strategic spot where the rivers Sambre and Meuse meet, towers more than one hundred metres above the Walloon city bearing its name. The imposing stronghold is without any doubt impressive. The last time I was at the top was in 2007. The last Grand Prix organised on the most famous and legendary track on our planet was in that year. Sebastien Pourcel (MX1) and Davide Guarneri (MX2) were the last from a series of winners that started in 1947. Since then, eight years have passed and still it seems like yesterday.
The red carpet
The constellation of legendary people, who together made several pages of motocross history, arrives one by one. The interval of their arrival gives the impression that this has been carefully orchestrated so that the host would have the opportunity to give each guest a warm welcome.
But it was not agreed upon at all, except an email from the man who was the first Italian World Champion in motocross history. Nobody knows what the reason was for this exclusive invitation, nobody except Angèla and René Liekens, and myself.
Joël Robert, Håkan Andersson, Harry Everts, Sylvain Geboers, André Malherbe accompanied by his best friend and also former Grand Prix rider Jean-Claude Laquaye, and Roger De Coster with his wife Kaarina complete the group, or almost. Heiki Mikkola and Eric Geboers also received a digital surprise from Italy, but much to their regret they cannot be present because of other commitments.
