CHICKS CAN RIP
“In a male-dominated field, there is nothing I find more satisfying than to see women performing well and showing they have a legitimate place in this sport.”
So says Rotorua’s Jane Roberts (pictured here), an enthusiastic mentor to and role model for many young women who race the men on the cross-country, enduro or motocross scene in New Zealand.
“Over the past year, we have had a record number of women participating across dirt biking events. In the motocross world, the much talked about Courtney Duncan is dominating both the women and men in the 125cc class. Sarah Elwin is another to look out for, consistently putting in solid laps but there are many others on the rise including up and coming juniors Tyla Cushion and Mikayla Rowe who have a great future ahead.
“In the cross country and enduro scene, it is exciting to see more women turning out and showing they have what it takes to race alongside the boys. With class acts like Julie Greenslade, Natasha Cairns, Janelle Walker, Jan-Maree Pool, Rachel Archer and Tyla Cushion (to name just a few) performing every week and proving that they belong in this sport.

“These girls are pushing the boys and definitely keeping them honest. There are a heap of other women coming through and certainly showing that hard work and attitude pays off.
“So how do we encourage more women into this sport? I love racing and believe that us girls can do anything that we want to – if we just believe in ourselves. Feel the fear and do it anyway!
“Don’t get me wrong, sitting on a start line at a cross country event, with a couple of hundred men and women all focused on racing to that first corner, is pretty nerve racking.
“The adrenaline surges – but there is no feeling like it. The sense of being part of something that is much bigger than yourself is difficult to describe. This sport is hard work, thrilling and often frustrating – but the rewards are immense.
“For those girls who have just read this and immediately thought ‘no way’, there are lots of options to get started in a low key environment where you can gain experience, have fun and see if you like it. You might be surprised how much you enjoy it. Small races such as the GNCC where you are start in small grids and have morning junior and novice races, or fun motocross club days are a good option. You can also hang back and take it easy while you figure out what this racing stuff is all about.
“Boys tend to have brute strength on their side. Us girls, not so much … but that does not mean we cannot be strong or dominate. We have to play to our strengths. Good technique, practice and a willingness to give it a go is a good start.
“If you are a woman who would like to have a go, or would like some female support, feel free to contact me. I am happy to show you the ropes and I know some good cheerleaders!
“I’ll leave you with one last thought and one of the most important things I’ve learned. Girls, stick together. Support each other. Train together. Push each other to be better. Leave everything we’ve got out on the track and then celebrate our successes together.
“With the New Zealand motocross, cross country and enduro nationals about to kick off, keep an eye out for the girls. There is no doubt – we can do anything!”
