KIWIS AMONG THE ELITE
Members of the 2014 Australian Junior Motocross team who competed at the World Junior Motocross Championships in Belgium last month took centre stage at the Australian Junior Motocross Championships at the Appin circuit last week.
And the small Kiwi contingent also stood out at the McArthur Motorcycle Club’s Bellbird circuit, most of the New Zealand riders entered finishing among the top 10 in their respective classes.
Ngatea’s Ben Broad finished 4th overall (in the 125cc 2st 15yrs class), Taupo’s Wyatt Chase was also placed 4th (125cc 13-15 class), Otorohanga’s Aaron King finished 7th (150cc 2st/250cc 4st 15 years class), Kate Brown was 7th (85cc 2st/150cc 4st Girls 12-U16 class) and Reece Walker (125cc 13-15 class) was ranked 8th in their respective classes. Earlier in the week, New Zealand’s Brodie Connolly put himself on the podium, finishing 3rd in the 9-12 years 85cc class.
Ngatea’s Isaac Broad finished 22nd overall in the 11-12 years 65cc class and the only other Kiwi rider was another MX Antix ace, Waitoki’s little Cole Davies, who just turned seven the week before to qualify – he raced in the 7-Under 9 years 50cc class, but, because of the way the Aussies run riders according to their age as at January 1, Davies came up against kids who were over 9 years old, just like the winner of the race.
Davies came in 19th overall out of a field of 53 riders.
But watch this space because this Kiwi kid is an amazing rider. He is No.1 in NZ on the 50cc and hopefully, after the mini nationals next weekend, he may be No.1 again.
As expected, it was the Australian riders who ruled on their home turf.
Mitch Evans continued his run of good form in winning all heats in both the 150cc 2st/250cc 4st 15 years and 125cc 2st 15yrs categories.
Hunter Lawrence joined brother Jett as a 2014 Australian champion after he just took out the 250cc 13-15’s.
Even after suffering a huge crash late Thursday afternoon, Caleb Grothues bounced back to win the 85cc 2st/150cc 4st 12-14’s Aussie Championship, while Cooper Pozniak wrapped up the 85cc 14-16’s and Cody Dyce claimed 125cc 13-15 title.
Despite finishing second to Danielle Foot in the final moto, Ashleigh McCormick wrapped up the 250cc girls’ title. Foot had won five races from five starts to earlier win the 85cc 2st/150cc 4st Girls 12-U16 Championship title.
