LEAD CUT IN HALF
Ryan Dungey finished 1-2 in his two 450cc races at Unadilla, New York, at the weekend, the 10th round of 12 in the United States Motocross Championships, enough for the Red Bull KTM rider to secure his second straight overall victory in the series.
It also meant Dungey had cut Ken Roczen’s 450 Class championship points lead in half.
Dungey entered the day 14 points back of his German team-mate. He’ll now leave Unadilla trailing by just seven points with two rounds left in the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.
In the first moto, Dungey used a strong start to put himself in third place behind the JGR Yamaha duo of Justin Brayton and Phil Nicoletti.
By the end of the first lap though, Dungey had made his way around both riders and went on to lead every lap of the moto. Although Roczen kept it close for awhile, he couldn’t match Dungey’s pace and had to settle for second place.
The second moto of the day provided some of the best racing of the year. After Brayton earned another holeshot, Eli Tomac overtook him for the lead on the opening lap. Just over 10 minutes into the moto, Trey Canard caught Tomac and was on his rear fender. The two went back-and-forth, exchanging the lead several times before Canard settled into the position on lap five.
It wasn’t smooth sailing after that for Canard though – Tomac and Dungey caught back up to him, and both riders put on a fierce challenge late in the race. Dungey eventually passed Tomac for second, but Canard was able to secure the moto win – the first of his career in the 450 Class.
250cc CLASS:
Meanwhile, in the 250cc class, a victory in the second moto saw Jeremy Martin tale a step closer towards wrapping up the 2014 championship.
Moto one winner Christophe Pourcel grabbed another holeshot – sweeping both holeshots for the third week in a row – and held the early lead, but had Martin following close behind.
With just over 13 minutes left on the countdown clock, Martin finally made the pass on Pourcel – who was perhaps cognizant of the fact that giving up the moto lead would not relinquish his grip on the overall victory.
Martin and Pourcel went on to race the rest of the moto in the first and second spots, with Martin claiming his eighth moto win of the season and Pourcel capturing his first overall victory in four years.
Martin now has an iron-clad grip on this title race after Cooper Webb and Blake Baggett both failed to make up ground once again. Baggett got off to a better start in moto two but only climbed from sixth to fourth throughout the duration of the race. As for Webb, he crashed about 20 minutes into the moto and would wind up with a DNF.
Martin now has a 66-point lead on Baggett and a 74-point lead on Webb. With just four motos left in the season, Martin is in good shape to lock up the title next week at Indiana with even just a conservative outing.
