The timing couldn’t be much better for Clement Desalle to collect a Grand Prix motocross victory.

With just a month to go before the Motocross of Nations, where he will lead Team Belgium into battle, the Suzuki ace was thrilled to win the GP of Belgium at the weekend, the 15th round of 17 in the world championships.

His 2-1 results were matched by series leader and defending MX1 world champion Antonio Cairoli, the Italian KTM star scoring 1-2 results at Bastogne on Sunday, but the count-back rule gave the overall win to Desalle and with it a much-needed confidence boost as the season winds down and the MXoN creeps up.

It perhaps just delayed the seemingly inevitable moment that Cairoli will wrap up the 2013 crown – he is 90 points clear of No.2 man Desalle with just two GPs to go – but the moment that any rider who can match Cairoli is certainly a moment worth celebrating.

Third overall at the GP of Belgium was Russian Honda rider Evgeny Bobryshev, landing on the podium with 4-3 results.

MX2 star Jeffrey Herlings dislocated his shoulder during qualifying on the Saturday and was unable to race on Sunday, but he had wrapped up the world title a week ago and still comfortably leads the MX2 class standings, now 139 points clear of Frenchman Jordi Tixier.

The race will now be on to see if Herlings can recover quickly enough to roll to the line for the Dutch at the upcoming MXoN.

Australian Dean Ferris (Yamaha) dominated both races in the MX2 class to take his first ever GP overall win finishing the weekend ahead of KTM’s Tixier, with Dutchman Glenn Coldenhoff (KTM) in third.
