It was almost inevitable that defending MX1 world champion Antonio Cairoli would wrap up the 2013 title at the penultimate round in England at the weekend and that exactly what happened with the KTM hero doing just enough with a first and an 18th placing to secure the crown.

It was Cairoli’s seventh motocross world championship title, following his first MX2 championship win in 2005 (at that time riding for Yamaha). He has now won five MX1 titles in a row since his first MX1 crown in 2009.

Belgian rival Clement Desalle won the day at Matterley Basin, in England, by scoring his fourth MX1 overall victory of the season ahead of his Suzuki team-mate Kevin Strijbos and Honda’s Evgeny Bobryshev.

In the MX2 class, young Dutchman Glenn Coldenhoff (KTM) won his first GP, finishing ahead of Britain’s Jake Nicholls (KTM) and Spain’s Jose Butron (KTM).

Dutch rider Jeffery Herlings (KTM) had already wrapped up the MX2 championship at round 14 in the Czech Republic at the start of this month, before being consigned to the sidelines with injury at the Belgian GP a fortnight later.
