HEADING TO THE STREETS
Auckland’s Jaden Hassan is well on target to claim top honours in the Formula Two section of the Suzuki Tri Series at his first time of trying.
The 18-year-old Yamaha ace bagged back-to-back F2 wins at round two of the Tri Series at Manfeild on Sunday, adding nicely to the pair of wins he celebrated at the series opener at Hampton Downs, near Huntly, a week earlier.
His unbeaten run of four wins therefore puts him well on target to wrap up the series on the public streets of Wanganui on Boxing Day, although that’s an event he’s never tackled before and so he’s taking nothing for granted.
“I wasn’t going to chance it on the streets but I’m going so well at the moment that I have decided to give it a go. I’ll ride it for fun really and not take too many risks,” said Hassan.
“I don’t need to win at Wanganui to win the championship. It will be a learning experience for me and I’ll just stay out of trouble.”
But the racer in Hassan will also mean that he’ll push his 2012 Yamaha R6 hard and still be chasing for a win on the day.
“I raced hard today over the first couple of laps, putting the hammer down just to get a break on the riders chasing me. My Homebuyers Reports Yamaha R6 is going really well and I’m very happy with the set-up.
“Auckland’s Glen Hessell is my mechanic and it’s his bike I’m racing. He’s doing a great job and I’m really grateful for his support.”
Hassan has extended his lead in the class to 18 points over Invercargill’s Jeremy Holmes (Honda CBR600RR), with Wanganui’s Jayden Carrick now moving his Suzuki GSX-R600 up to third overall in the class with just his home town event to come.
This sets up an interesting confrontation between a street race ‘newbie’ and series leader, up against a home-town hero who is very comfortable on the unforgiving twists and turns of the concrete kerb-lined streets.
