OLD TIME WARRIORS
The Taupo Vintage Motocross Race Team came away with a fist full of trophies after the final round at Wanganui recently.
Yes, not only does Taupo produce world class modern-day racers, Taupo also has a very strong team of older gents who race Vintage motocross bikes – the Team Taupo VMX team comprising Darryl August (pictured above), Andrew Maisey (pictured below), Bill Doe, Grant Curran and Mac McCormack.
Vintage motocross has grown to become popular throughout New Zealand over the last 8 to ten years with mainly older guys and gals riding them with most riders being over the age of 40 and a few as old as 70.
The bikes must be no later than 1986 at year of manufacture and the classes are then split on year and engine capacity to even things up a bit, with some bikes as early as 1965 it certainly makes for loads of exciting and entertaining racing for all. The races usually attract a field of around 130 competitors from all over New Zealand.
The New Zealand Championship is held over five rounds throughout New Zealand and is spread over 5 months (“to give us old fellas time to recover for the next round,” says Darryl).
The racing was close throughout the entire 5 rounds with only 1 point separating 1st and 2nd place in the Pre 75 125cc class.
TEAM TAUPO VMX is sponsored by Darryl August Motorcycles, Bill Doe Racing and Groombridge Refrigeration
