The motocross GP pre-season has kicked off in brilliant fashion for new KTM rider Antonio Cairoli.

The Italian world MX1 champion raced to victory at the popular stand-alone Mantova Starcross in Italy at the weekend, giving the early signal that he will again be the man to beat when the GP season proper kicks off in Bulgaria in April.

Racing his KTM 350sxf machine for the first time in Mantova, the three-times world motocross champion looked even stronger than he did in his 2009 winning season.

Cairoli went 1-1-3 in the three races to easily take the overall.

Second overall was Belgian former world champion Steve Ramon (Suzuki) 6-4-4, and third place going to fellow Belgian Clement Desalle (Suzuki) with 16-2-2.

The winner in the MX2 class was Ireland’s Shaun Simpson with 4-7-14, next came French MX2 world champion Marvin Musquin with 18-11-8.
