Belgian legend and five-time motocross world champion Roger De Coster talked on a recent DMXS radio show about his position in the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations.
This famous former racer, simply known as ‘The Man’ in world motocross circles, said he isn’t going anywhere soon as far as the USA team Motocross of Nations (MXoN) manager position.
It was amazing to hear Roger De Coster talk about the MXoN, Australian star Jett Lawrence and the all-time greats, who belong on Mount Rushmore of motocross.
DMXS: What about the des Nations, you have a lot of work going on, would you ever consider stepping down from the job of team manager for the American team?
De Coster: I like des Nations; I like the event a lot and I think it is one of the best events of the year. I like to help, but if they like somebody else to do it and they can do a better job, I am on board.
DMXS: Every two years or more special?
De Coster: I have been thinking about the format, I would like to see two motos 250 and two motos 450, and not them racing against each other. That would be better. It would cost a little bit more, because it would mean four riders, but I think it would be better, more balanced, I think the racing might be better. Now, the guy who has to ride the 250, it is no fun, because you know you will most likely have a poor start and the 450 roost, the whole thing.
DMXS: You have a lot of experience in this, and I don’t think people understand now many teams told you know when picking the riders?
De Coster: Yes, it used to be, whoever you wished to go, they would be happy to go, and the team would be happy to go, but now, some of the riders are not interested, or the rider is interested, and the team isn’t interested. Oh, damn.
DMXS: This kind of sad, but talking with David Bailey about this, a lot of current fans don’t realise how much it means to race for Team USA. Do you think it will ever retain that prestige?
De Coster: It is hard to say, it is hard to say. I hope the people will get back on it and maybe something can be done long term. They seem to be a better cooperation from both sides, from the European side and the American side. So, maybe, down the road we can get it better again.
