STROUD AND STAUFFER
He didn’t win everything but Andrew Stroud did more than enough when he wrapped up his third consecutive Suzuki Tri Series title at Wanganui’s famous annual Cemetery Circuit race meeting on Boxing Day.
The 42-year-old father-of-eight from Hamilton took his Suzuki GSX-R1000 to finish 1-2 in his two Formula One outings on Boxing Day. He fended off tenacious fellow Waikato man Nick Cole (Kawasaki ZX10R) to win the first race, but he was beaten by visiting Australian Daniel Stauffer (Yamaha YZF R1) in the next race.
But it was still easily enough to give Stroud the class outright for the day and for the series too.
Strauffer finished fourth in his first F1 race and that ultimately proved costly in his ambitions for class honours at Wanganui. He had skipped the second round of the series at Manfeild a week earlier, so he also had no chance of taking the series honours.
But Stauffer did have the last laugh, winning the one-off Robert Holden Memorial feature race that wound up the day, beating Stroud to the chequered flag by two one-hundredths of a second. Third was Tauranga’s Sloan Frost (BMW SS1000RR), fourth was Cole and Canada’s Andrew Nelson (Yamaha YZF R1) rounded out the top five.
Three-time New Zealand superbike champion Robbie Bugden (Suzuki), the Australian making his Wanganui street circuit debut, fell victim to a first-turn crash in the second F1 race and was taken to hospital with a broken leg.
It now seems impossible for him to challenge Stroud for the national superbike crown when that series kicks off near Timaru on January 30.
Other Tri Series class winners were Wellington’s Glen Skachill (Suzuki, 600 supers), New Plymouth’s Terry Fitzgerald (Suzuki, F3 sportbikes), Paraparaumu’s Sean Donnelly (Kawasaki, Post Classics pre-89), Taupo’s Scott Moir (Aprilia, over-450cc super moto), Italy’s Davide Gozzini (TM, under-450cc super moto), Christchurch’s John Ross (BMW, Bears), Wanganui’s Steve Bron and Dennis Simonsen (Suzuki, sidecars).
