Predictability is fast becoming a byword for Southland youngster Seth Morrow … and that’s a good thing, especially if it means being renowned for outstanding performances in multiple categories at the same event.
Just two weeks after the LMC Husqvarna Racing Team rider had climbed onto the podium in both the junior 14-16 years’ 250cc class and the junior 12-14 years’ 125cc class at the 2022 New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships in Taranaki, the young man from Invercargill was up to the same tricks at Taupo’s famous MX Fest event over Labour Weekend, this time going one step better in that he topped the podium in both bike divisions.
There’s not much to the 14-year-old – he’s not six foot tall with bulging biceps – but he is ferociously strong, determined, extremely capable and has a great couple of bikes and that’s partly what’s allowing him to dominate the sport in his chosen categories.
The year 10 Southland Boys’ High School student won all three of his races in the 12-14 years’ 125cc class at Taupo over Labour Weekend, finishing the weekend ahead of Rotorua’s Delton Manson (KTM) and Taupo’s Reid Gordon (Husqvarna TC125).
Morrow then took his four-stroke Husqvarna FC250 to compile a 1-1-2 score-card in the 14-16 years’ 250cc class, comfortably winning the weekend ahead of Levin’s Phoenix Van Dusschoten (Honda) and New Plymouth’s Rian King (KTM).
Te Puke’s Flynn Watts (Kawasaki) won the final junior 250cc race of the weekend, but a non-scoring result earlier on Saturday ruined his podium ambitions.
“This is the first time I’ve focussed on the 250cc class, so this was a really good result. It was a pity for Flynn Watts that he couldn’t finish race two, because he was riding really well and would surely have been on the podium with me.
“Consistency was the key for me. I was trying hard to catch Flynn in the final race, but I also didn’t want to risk too much and maybe throw away the whole weekend with a crash. I didn’t want to push too hard and lose it all. I just kept the flow going and wrapped it up.”
The next major road trips to the North Island will be when Morrow travels with his family to race at the annual Summercross event near Whakatane just after Christmas and they then make the lengthy northward journey again to race at the big annual New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville in late January.
Meanwhile, two other riders also won two classes at Taupo at the weekend, Dairy Flats rider Cole Davies and Whakatane’s Darren Capill.
Davies won both the Junior 15-16 years’ 125cc class on Saturday and the followed that up by also winning the Senior 125cc two-stroke class the following day, while Capill won the veterans’ 34-44 years’ class and the MX3 class as well.
