The Waikato Motocross Champs are on this weekend, two-days of gloriously combative dirt-bike action.
With the COVID-19 pandemic causing all sorts of problems nationwide, the fact that the host North King Country Motorcycle Club has the courage and determination to go ahead and run this popular event is exciting news indeed.
It’s a two-day event, with minis and juniors racing Saturday, December 4, and the seniors, veterans and women racing the following day, Sunday, December 5.
Now with being in the orange COVID-19 traffic light setting, the club says it can lift the restrictions on support staff and spectators.
On the start line, expect to see Kiwi greats such as Honda team-mates Cody Cooper (pictured here) and James Scott showing up to bang handlebars, along with many of the riders who will no doubt be their key rivals when then nationals kick off in the New Year.
Will we see Maximus Purvis, Kayne Lamont, Josiah Natzke, Brodie Connolly, Micah McGoldrick, Tyler Steiner, Tommy Watts, Richard Horne, Jesse Donnelly, Rian King, Jared Hannon, Jack Coleman, Halle Cox, Hannah Powell, Roma Edwards and Zara Gray, for example, also using this event to shake out a few cobwebs?
A new class has been added to the mix this year too, the Super Juniors 105-112 Class and 12-16 years (not 85cc).
There will be no “double classing” permitted on the same bike
There will be two feature races with the opportunity to win cash.
Camping is also available at the venue.
Riders will no doubt use this event as part of their build-up to the Summer season, including the Honda New Zealand Woodville Motocross Grand Prix and the four-round nationals, with round one will now be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022.
The nationals calendar is:
- NZMX Round 1: Saturday, February 12 [South Otago Motorcycle Club]
- NZMX Round 2: Sunday, February 20 [Rotorua Motorcycle Club]
- NZMX Round 3: Sunday, March 20 [Hawke’s Bay Motorcycle Club]
- NZMX Round 4: Sunday, March 27 [Taupo Motorcycle Club]
