Colorado Kawasaki ace Eli Tomac came out on top of a mixed day of racing at the United States motocross nationals round in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, at the weekend.

Without winning a moto, Tomac took the overall win at this fourth round of 12 with a 3-2 performance that included some epic battles in moto two.

German Honda star Ken Roczen rebounded from a sixth finish in the opening moto to decisively win moto two and secure the day’s overall runner-up position

Roczen and Tomac are now tied on points for the lead in the 2019 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Series.

Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson took the final spot on the High Point Raceway podium; Anderson is tied in points for third in the series standings with team-mate Zach Osborne, 32 points behind Tomac and Roczen.

Tomac was relentless in moto two. Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) set up his overall with a third place finish in moto one, crossing the line behind Anderson and winner Blake Baggett. In moto two, Tomac’s sixth place start made him look like an unlikely overall winner.

It took Tomac five laps to improve a position when he passed Osborne, putting Tomac behind Anderson. Tomac dogged Anderson for almost seven nail-biting laps before getting by on lap 13 (of 17) for third.

Tomac then engaged KTM’s Cooper Webb for another three laps before motoring past him on a long right and at the bottom of a hill. By then, moto two winner Roczen was long gone, and Tomac settled for second. Tomac inherited the overall when Anderson faded back to fifth late in the race.

Roczen’s settings weren’t right for moto one, and it cost him the overall win.

Roczen (Team Honda HRC) started in seventh in moto one and was able to work his way up to fifth by the second lap.

However, a charge by KTM’s Marvin Musquin dropped Roczen back to sixth with three laps remaining. Roczen reverted to the settings from the previous national round, and came from behind for a dominating moto two win. Roczen was in eighth after one lap, improving to fourth after three laps, including a pass of Tomac. It took Roczen a few laps to pick off Anderson, and Joey Savatgy after another few laps. Roczen quickly caught leader Webb and flew by him to take the lead. Roczen gapped Webb and was never challenged. Roczen had the overall until Tomac passed Webb with less than three laps remaining.
