Flying Dutchman Jeffery Herlings is the new MXGP motocross world champion.
Herlings clinched the title ahead of defending world champion and KTM team-mate Antonio Cairoli with a round to spare, winning the day at the penultimate round at the 2018 series at Assen, in The Netherlands, at the weekend.
Joining the world championship classes for the MXGP and MX2 categories at Assen was the fifth round of six in the Women’s Motocross World Championship (WMX) and the European Championships for EMX125 and EMX250 class riders as well.
Unfortunately for New Zealand followers of the sport, injury meant Otago’s Courtney Duncan had been forced last week to withdraw from the Dutch GP and she will also be absent at the final round in Italy, the 22-year-old Yamaha star therefore slipping from the top of the WMX championship standings and down to fourth overall.
Italy’s Kiara Fontanesi, who had been 21 points behind Duncan, finished 1-1 at penultimate round of the WMX at Assen and took over the WMX World Champs lead.
New Zealand’s Dylan Walsh was leading the first EMX 250 race at Assen, but seized his bike and DNFed. He finished 32nd in race two, DNFing after eight laps.
Also in the EMX 250 class, fellow Kiwi Josiah Natzke finished 10th and 19th.
In the EMX 125 class, Oparau’s James Scott finished 12th in moto one and 23rd in moto two.
