ANOTHER FIRST-TIME WINNER
Spain’s Maverick Vinales claimed his first MotoGP victory and the first for Suzuki in 16 years with a dominant ride in the British MotoGP at Silverstone, in the United Kingdom, overnight.
The 21-year-old became the first rider to win a premier class race for Suzuki in full dry conditions since Kenny Roberts Jnr. in 2000, disappearing into the distance on the GSX-RR and pulling away to win by 3.4 seconds from Britain’s Cal Crutchlow.
Italian Valentino Rossi finished third, while Spain’s Marc Marquez ran off track during a late battle with Crutchlow and dropped down the order to finish fourth.
Rising star Vinales is the fourth new race winner of the season and seventh different winner so far.
The original race was red-flagged on the opening lap following a huge accident involving Loris Baz and Pol Espargaro. Baz required the most treatment at trackside, but waved as he was moved to the ambulance.
Alex Lowes was making his MotoGP race debut, in place of the injured Bradley Smith at Tech 3 Yamaha. Smith suffered knee ligament injuries at last weekend’s Oschersleben round of the World Endurance Championship and has also been ruled out of Misano.
Jack Miller was returning to action after missing the last two races due to injuries in Austria.
