FRANCE NEEDS A RE-THINK
Team France will revise its line-up for the upcoming Motocross of Nations after MX2 rider Dylan Ferrandis crashed in Switzerland at the weekend.
The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider broke his arm in the crash and his GP season is over.
Ferrandis rode for France when they won the MXoN in Latvia in 2014, but was not in the team that successfully defended the MXoN crown for France at Ernee, in France, last year, with Marvin Musquin taking on the MX2 duties on that occasion.
“I had a good feeling with the track in the practice sessions (in Switzerland) and got the pole pretty easily in the free practice session,” Ferrandis said.
“Then in the timed practice period I started a fast lap but on the finish jump another rider changed his line and hit my front wheel. It was impossible to avoid the crash and, unfortunately, when I was on the ground I already knew that my right arm was broken.”
The French announcement advised that Benoit Paturel, who is currently third in the 2016 MX2 World Championship chase, is the reserve rider and he is likely to be joining Romain Febvre and Gautier Paulin for the squad to race at Maggiora, north-west of Milan, on September 24-25.
France is a three-time winner at the MXoN – winning outright at Namur, in Belgium, in 2001, in Latvia in 2014 and in France last season – and would be one of the favoured teams again for the event in Italy this year.
Also, it has been revealed that Eli Tomac won’t now race for the United States at the MXoN, “because of a very busy schedule”, meaning it is likely that Team USA could comprise Justin Barcia, Cooper Webb and Alex Martin.
Team USA is expected to be officially announced in the next few days.
