DOUBLE FOR SYKES
Britain’s Tom Sykes romped to a double winning weekend at Donington Park with a perfect ride from the Kawasaki ace to secure a phenomenal sixth consecutive World Superbike Championships victory at his home event, the sixth round of the series.
Sykes managed a lights-to-flag win, never looking in danger of slipping up to eventually take the chequered flag by just under 10 seconds ahead of championship leader Jonathan Rea, while Welsh rider Chaz Davies grabbed third in a repeat of the race one podium.
Unlike race one Sykes got a strong start from pole to lead into turn one while Haslam again blasted off the line from fourth into second. Sykes almost immediately set lap record pace and broke away from the chasing pack for his second victory of the year.
The Yorkshire rider now has six World Superbike race victories around Donington Park which draws him level with fellow Brit Carl Fogarty for most wins around the Leicestershire circuit.
His Kawasaki team-mate Rea never challenged Sykes after a huge moment nearly sent the Northern Irishman sprawling in the opening stages.
Running in third on the second lap Rea’s bike lurched from underneath him down Coppice but incredibly he was able to control the tank slapper. The incident pushed Rea down to seventh, meaning he had it all to do to keep his rostrum record going.
Such was the dominance of the Kawasaki machine at the Leicestershire circuit, Rea was able to carve his way through the pack to take second ahead of Davies.
Leon Camier suffered a low side crash on lap three going into the Foggy Esses and slid into the gravel trap just ahead of the charging Rea.
While all incidents were happening behind him Sykes had bolted up front, breaking the race lap record at Donington Park with a 1m 27.748s, taking the record off his team-mate Rea who had gone quickest of all in race one.
Ducati rider Davies achieved consecutive rostrum finishes for his best performance around his ‘bogey circuit’, ahead of Leon Haslam who was able to maintain his second place in the World Superbike championship standings by one point over Sykes.
Davide Giugliano recovered from a disappointing race one to take fifth place ahead of local star Alex Lowes.
Aprilia rider Jordi Torres made strong progress from his 13th on the grid to take a healthy helping of points as Sylvain Guintoli, Ayrton Badovini and Matteo Baiocco completed the top 10.
