DOUBLE-HEADER WEEKEND
The first round of the Woodhill Two-Man dirt bike race series is scheduled for this Sunday.
Sponsored by Spectrum Motorcycles and promoted by Endless Dirt Biking, this first round is on the day after Saturday’s Dirt Guide Series final round, making it a real double-header for dirt bike racing this weekend.
Most of the top riders who entered last season are returning for 2014, however there will be a few absences with a large contingent of riders still over in Romania after competing in the annual Red Bull Romaniacs hard enduro.
This opens up a few classes especially in the ‘Father and Son’ category.
With national cross-country champion Adrian Smith not making the first round, Yamaha’s Adam Reeves from Palmerston North (the defending solo class champion, pictured here), fellow Yamaha rider Rueben Vermeer also on a YZ450 and Marton’s Cam Smith (Kawasaki KX450) look to be the front-runners in the three-hour solo class.
In the Expert Two Man class, the young and extremely determined champions from last year Kaukapakapa’s Joshua Jack and Muriwai’s Luke Mobberley (riding a Gas Gas 125) will be hard to beat on their home ground. Also on home ground and going extremely well this year is another Yamaha rider, Auckland’s Chris Power, who will team up with Pakaraka’s Mitchell Nield (Yamaha YXZ125).
Representing the red brand will be the Cyclespot Honda pairing of noted sand riders Daniel Nieuwenhuyzen and James Ainsworth. This pairing have a pedigree founded in Woodhill forest and could be the surprise package.
Event organisers, Endless Dirt Biking www.endlessdirtbiking.co.nz, have put in a track that they describe as very flowing, with good overtaking avenues that riders of all abilities will enjoy. The race starts at 12 noon sharp with the junior/novice ladies race starting earlier, at 9.30am.
