THE FINAL ROUND
Rising Aussie star Matt Moss will again step up to tackle the big boys this Saturday night.
The Team Rockstar Motul Suzuki rider will again enter the open class, this time at the seventh and final round of the Australasian Super X Championship at Brisbane.
With the 2009 Pro Lites Championship safe courtesy of his perfect win record in the first five rounds, Moss will ride the fuel injected Suzuki RM-Z450 in the premier Super X Open class.
This weekend’s racing will provide valuable insight for Moss, fresh from signing a new deal with Rockstar Makita Suzuki in the US which will see him ride a factory RM-Z450 in the AMA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 2010.
Joining Australian-born double world champion Chad Reed (Kawasaki) in the final round will be three superstars of world supercross – Josh Grant (Yamaha), Davi Millsaps (Honda) and PJ Larsen (Yamaha).
These three AMA frontrunners will jet in to compete in the highly anticipated final round of the 2009 Australasian Super X Championship, at Brisbane’s QSAC Stadium on Saturday.
It sets up a mouth watering finish to the 2009 Australasian Super X series, particularly for the super talented Moss.
The current Australian Motocross and Super X Pro Lites champion stepped up to the Open class at the last round of the Super X championship in New Zealand a fortnight ago.
After qualifying fastest, Moss recorded a fifth, third and second with only a DNF in one of the four finals denying him a podium finish.
“I can’t wait to get on the Suzuki RM-Z450 in front of the local fans,” said Moss.
“New Zealand was a good start – I learned a lot just from that one round – and I’m confident of a big finish at Brisbane.”
Moss can look forward to great support from a partisan crowd, with organisers confident of record attendance for an Australasian Super X event with more than 22,000 tickets already sold.
Organisers have promised a track 30 per cent bigger than any supercross track previously built in Australia, with more than 7,500 tonnes of dirt shaped into a highly technical track more than a kilometre in length.
The hugely successful Triple Challenge race format will feature in the finals, which pits riders against each other in three, seven lap races.
Many fans will be keen to see how Moss and the other Australians match up to the likes of leading Americans Grant, Millsaps and Larsen.
Larsen, who will be racing in the open class, was the 2008 Loretta Lynns Champion and was the recipient of the 2008 AMA Horizon Award, which is awarded to the best up and comer. He had his first pro season in 2009 for the Canidae Kawasaki Team and gained top five finishes in the West Coast Supercross Lites series.
JDR Motorsports / MXRAD team manager Jay Rynenberg said he is really excited about bringing Larsen out to race.
“PJ has had an outstanding amateur career with several national titles, and a strong rookie season in the pro ranks this year. Although he made a few rookie mistakes, he really showed he has the potential to become a future champion. With Andrew (McFarlane) injured, this provided a perfect opportunity for PJ to step in and fly the flag for the JDR Motorsports / MXRAD race team.”
“I’ve been out in Australia for a few days now and I am really enjoying myself. It’s a different way of life out here but the team has been really supportive. I rode the bike for the first time yesterday and felt comfortable right away; I have never ridden a Yamaha before so it’s a credit to the MXRAD guys for setting it up so fast,” said Larsen.
“I’ve been watching Super X on the internet back home a lot and it seems like there is a lot of hype and attention towards the series this year, so I am looking forward to lining up against Chad (Reed), Jay (Marmont) and all the other Aussie guys!”
The hugely successful Triple Challenge race format will feature in the finals of the Open and 250cc classes, which pits riders against each other in three, seven lap races (Open) and three, five lap races (250cc). Three nail biting holeshots followed by such short and fast sprints will create action packed racing that leaves no room for error.
There will be a host of activities at the event to keep fans entertained including an invitational junior race with the best upcoming riders in the country competing, a Sedgeway race with professional Sedgeway racers and a tribute to retiring legend, Troy Carroll (Suzuki).
