WHO IS THAT?
The BikesportNZ.com photo archive is a treasure trove of classic old snaps.
We have decided that each week we are going to run an archive photo or two – a bit of a guessing game for you. See if you can answer the questions about BOTH photos.
We’ll offer you a few clues, but we also want to keep you guessing.
Check back and we’ll give you the answers next week, along with our next “Who’s that?” feature photos.
Crown Kiwi – EVS – 100%
Plus, we have a sponsor for the feature. Thanks to Crown Kiwi, EVS and 100% apparel and accessories, we can offer a small prize each week – a tee-shirt or a cap – to the first respondent with the correct answers.
We were absolutely swamped with correct entries this week, although the first to answer correctly was Auckland bike fan Robert Smith.
Congratulations also to Darren Capill, of Whakatane, who also, perhaps not surprisingly, correctly answered both questions.
We had received a few comments from the “Tar Babies” that they couldn’t answer the questions about the “Dust Bunnies” and vice versa.
This week we swing back towards the road-racing community.
There should be plenty of correct answers to the easy questions about these two photos.
Next week we’ll feature dirt bike characters again.
Clues for photo above:
This photo was taken at a road-race circuit in the South Island about five years ago, before they made it to the big time. This rider is now a current Kiwi international. Who is it?
We do also need you to answer the question about the photo below.
Clues for photo below:
These two characters are from different countries. They both raced for Ducati in the World Superbike Championships. Who are they and what was their highest ranking in the WSBK Championships?
Last week’s characters revealed:
The main photo displayed last week was taken at a supercross inside a shed at Clareville, just outside Masterton in 1993. Bike No.25 is a rider named Richard Scott. But what we wanted you to tell us was who was the rider on the Honda next to him, on bike No.34? The clue here was that he was a world champion but in a different bike code … in other words, not in supercross. We can now reveal that it was Kiwi legend Stefan Merriman, now based in Australia.
Of course Merriman was a former junior world trials champion and four-time former world enduro champion, not to mention the fact he was also the International Six Days Enduro outright champion on two occasions.
He won the World Enduro Championships in 2000 (250cc), 2001 (400cc), 2003 (250cc) and 2004 (Enduro 1). He won the ISDE overall when it was staged in Spain in 2000 and again when it was held in Poland in 2004.
We also asked you to tell us who are the two riders on the Kawasaki bikes, No.52 and No.72. They were Darren Capill and Peter Aldridge respectively.

The second photo shown last week was taken at the Tokoroa Supercross about 12 years ago. The rider is no longer associated with Yamaha. He is a former national motocross champion and still very active in the sport.
This photo was of Andrew Hardisty, now owner of the Moto City Suzuki bike dealership in Mount Maunganui and also the manager of the official Suzuki Motocross Race Team.
Hardisty won the New Zealand 125cc motocross championships title on a Kawasaki KX125 in 1995 and again in February 2000, this time on a Yamaha YZ125.
Well done to those who emailed us with their answers last week.
Email your answers to this week’s quiz to contest@bikesportnz.com
Note: Be careful to answer the questions being asked. We may ask for a time, a place, an event or ask for one or several of the individuals in the two photos to be identified.
