WHO IS THIS?
The BikesportNZ.com photo archive is a treasure trove of classic old snaps.
We have decided that each week we are going to run an archive photo or two – a bit of a guessing game for you. See if you can answer the questions about BOTH photos.
We’ll offer you a few clues, but we also want to keep you guessing.
Check back and we’ll give you the answers next week, along with our next “Who’s that?” feature photos.
Crown Kiwi – EVS – 100%
Plus, we have a sponsor for the feature. Thanks to Crown Kiwi, EVS and 100% apparel and accessories, we can offer a small prize each week – a tee-shirt or a cap – to the first respondent with the correct answers.
We were absolutely swamped with correct entries this week, although the first to answer correctly was Australian bike fan Jason Clement, from Perth, who sent us the two correct answers within minutes of the item going live on-line just after 1am (NZ time) last Friday.
We had received a few comments from the “Tar Babies” that they couldn’t answer the questions about the “Dust Bunnies” and vice versa.
Now it seems our little competition has gone the other way and become TOO EASY.
This week we swing from road-racing and back towards the dirt bike community.
There should be plenty of correct answers to the easy questions about these two photos.
Next week we’ll feature road bike characters again.
Clues for photo above:
This photo was taken at a supercross inside a shed at Clareville, just outside Masterton in 1993. Bike No.25 is a rider called Richard Scott. But what we want you to tell us is who is the rider on the Honda next to him, bike No.34? The clue here is that he was a world champion in a different bike code … in other words, not in supercross. Also, can you tell us who are the two riders on the Kawasaki bikes, No.52 and No.72?
We do also need you to answer the question about the photo below.
Clues for photo below:
This photo was taken at the Tokoroa Supercross about 12 years ago. The rider is no longer associated with Yamaha. He is a former national motocross champion and still very active in the sport. Can you name him?
Last week’s characters revealed:
The main photo displayed last week was taken at Manfeild’s final round of the World Superbike Championships in 1990. The rider is, of course, Frenchman Raymond Roche.
Roche is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer.
In 1981, he teamed up with Jean Lafond to win the Endurance World Championship. His best year in Grand Prix racing was in 1984 when he finished third in the 500cc world championship behind Americans Eddie Lawson and Randy Mamola.
After retiring from Grand Prix racing, he competed in the Superbike World Championship as a member of the Ducati factory racing team, winning that championship in 1990.
The second item last week was a photo of flamboyant Italian rider Fabrizio Pirovano. We managed to interview this rider when he raced here and that was a real thrill too.
When the Superbike World Championship began in 1988, Pirovano was one of its first entrants, finishing as championship runner-up in 1988 and 1990, and in the top five on four other occasions.
He won 10 races and took 37 further podium finishes. He is in the championship’s all-time top 10 for starts, points and podiums. He has also won the Italian Superbike title four times.
By the mid-1990s, the World Superbike championship featured more international stars (such as Troy Corser and Carl Fogarty) and, in 1995, a second place finish at the season-opener at Hockenheim was his only podium of the season and he left the championship at the end of that year.
Well done to those who emailed us with their answers last week.
Email your answers to this week’s quiz to contest@bikesportnz.com
Note: Be careful to answer the questions being asked. We may ask for a time, a place, an event or ask for one or several of the individuals in the two photos to be identified.
