After a checkup for his right shoulder blade injury, Marc Márquez has undergone a successful operation at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, Spain.
The same medical team who had examined him seven days earlier found that the coracoid fracture and ligament damage were not showing sufficient signs of stabilization after a week of being immobilised.
Therefore, given the risk of residual instability, it was decided to go ahead with surgical stabilisation and repair the acromioclavicular ligaments.
Surgery was one of the options considered by doctors from the outset in the event that the planned conservative treatment failed.
Márquez had contested the Grand Prix of Indonesia at the Mandalika Circuit, round 18 of the world series, when he was involved in a crash triggered by another rider, while Ducati team-mate Francesco Bagnaia crashed out of the encounter during lap eight.
Márquez had enjoyed a good start from row three as he entered turn one in sixth place. At turn seven, he was struck by Aprilia racer Marco Bezzecchi and crashed heavily.
As the 18th Grand Prix of the season drew to a close, Márquez, who was already crowned MotoGP World Champion, now holds a tally of 545 points. Bagnaia is third, 88 points behind the rider in second place, Márquez’ brother Alex Márquez. The Triple Crown is completed by the Teams’ Title secured by the Ducati Lenovo Team and the Constructors’ World Championship clinched by Ducati.
The Ducati Lenovo Team will be back in action this weekend, October 17, at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Australia for the fourth-last event of the season.
