Gillman, in South Australia, is set to host round four of the 2022 Australian ProMX Championship on Sunday with the points extremely tight at the top, particularly in the premier MX1 class.
In the MX1 class, it is the 2019 champion, Husqvarna Australia’s Todd Waters, who has navigated the carnage and unpredictability of the opening three rounds of the championship and he arrives at Gillman with the coveted red leader’s plate in the MX1 class.
With the resets we have seen after each round following the exit of championship contenders Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Yamaha) and Kyle Webster (HRC Honda Racing Australia), it is still all on the table for the elite talent in MX1.
Sitting just one point behind Waters is Arron Tanti, of the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team, who has shown tremendous speed throughout the opening three rounds and will be looking for his breakthrough first win of the season at Gillman.
Neither Waters or Tanti can afford to take their eyes off the prize as behind them comes a freight train of championship experience and momentum in the form of HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Dean Ferris, who in just two rounds of racing post retirement, absolutely dominated every inch of the race track at Wodonga for round three, sending a stern message that the three-time champion is back and ready to contest for the 2022 ProMX crown.
Veterans Brett Metcalfe, on his GO24 KTM machine, and Kirk Gibbs, on the KTM Factory Racing Team bike , both enter Gillman as SA hometown favourites and will look to put on a race winning show for the diehard SA motocross fans.
In Pirelli MX2, HRC Honda Racing Australia’s Wilson Todd has maintained a healthy points lead into round four, however the story from last round was the emergence of Serco Yamaha’s Bailey Malkiewicz who rode to his maiden MX2 overall win, momentarily derailing Todd’s dominance of the championship so far.
Can Malkiewicz take advantage of this momentum and mount a challenge to Todd at Gillman?
One thing is for sure in the MX2 class, WBR Yamaha Bulk Nutrients team rider Ryder Kingsford, Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson and the Yamalube Yamaha team-mates of Rhys Budd and Alex Larwood will all look to stake their claim on the MX2 podium and make inroads into championship leader Wilson Todd’s points lead.
