At first glance, you might think “Spyda’s Guide To New Zealand Motorcycle Road Racing Circuits” was either the work of a crazy man or that of a pure genius.
Knowing the author, Graeme ‘Spyda’ Staples, as we do, you’d understand the split opinions and fog of confusion, but we thought it best to go with the “genius” motif.
So, a book that uncovers and then basks in the glory of times past and motorcycle racing tracks that are no longer in mainstream use, would perhaps find favour with both ends of the fascination spectrum … you’d either be mildly amused or massively addicted to it.
Perhaps you could factor Spyda’s Guide To New Zealand Motorcycle Road Racing Circuits (from past to present) into a wild motorcycle road trip, taking it with you as you and your mates ride from one end of the country to the other, to pay homage and revel in the many and varied race circuits, either purpose-built tracks or converted public streets.
It’s fascinating stuff and we have to confess that we only knew about a handful of them.
We were familiar with Manfeild, of course, but what about Grovetown, Feilding’s Kitchener Park, Otago’s Ammunition Track or the Bell Block Aerodrome? We knew about Whanganui’s Cemetery Circuit, but how about New Wharf Circuit, Taupo Industrial Area, Moutoa Gardens or the Waiheke Island Tourist Trophy Race?
Basically there are two versions of the book (although with the same content) … $54 is for the soft-cover one and $59 for the wire-bound ‘Touring Edition’, a bit like a road atlas book, and all prices are GST inclusive.
These are designed to fit into a tank bag, or have handy in the car, turned to the right page for checking out the circuits.
There is a $8 flat rate charge for freight, for one to 100 books, and it is already proving popular with more than 350 now sold after it first went on sale in late July.
“There’s even a colouring-in page for the sidecar folk,” says Spyda.

“At this stage I’m selling them myself and have the odd retailer doing them,” Spyda said.
So, take it from us, Spyda’s Guide is a must-have for your next roadie.
