SOLID SHOWING FROM KIWI RIDERS
There were several solid performances from the Kiwi riders at round two of the Australian Motocross Championships at Appin over the weekend.
Mount Maunganui’s Rhys Carter (Kawasaki) was the most successful of the Kiwis, twice finishing seventh in the premier MX1 class.
Coupled with his solid results from round one of the series, Carter is eighth overall after two events, just three points behind Caleb Ward and seven ahead of former Australian international Brett Metcalfe.
“My qualifying was better than for the first round, which was good,” said Carter, who clocked the eighth fastest time in an MX1 session where just four seconds covered the top 10 qualifiers.
“This was not my best performance in Australia and I still have a few things that I need to sort out, but everything is going in the right direction, which is good.”
Unfortunately for fellow Kiwi Kayne Lamont (Yamaha), his afternoon was disastrous. Lamont crashed out of the first MX1 race and injured his foot.
There were just five laps to go when he crashed and he was running in eighth position at the timer. He did not start race two.
Dean Ferris finished the day 1-1 in the MX1 class and extended his championship lead to 13 points over Kirk Gibbs.
The second MX1 race of the day was run in two parts after a stoppage due to a crash.
When the race was red-flagged, Luke Clout was leading from Ferris and Gibbs and Carter was, at that stage too, seventh overall.
Nathan Crawford won the MX2 class with a 1-1 score-card.
Kiwi MX2 champ Hamish Harwood (KTM) twice finished 10th in the MX2 class battles and he is now seventh in the championship standings, just one point behind Kyle Webster and five ahead of defending Australian MX2 champion Egan Mastin.
In the MX Development (under-19) class, the day belonged to Riley Dukes, who twice finished runner-up.
Kiwi 125cc champ Maximus Purvis (Yamaha) registered a 13-7 score-card and is now eighth overall in the championship standings, 14 points behind Rhys Budd and five ahead of Mason Rowe.
It is a double-header weekend coming up for rounds three and four at Wonthaggi, Victoria, round three on May 19 and round four the following day.
