British rider Mark Wilkes has made many friends during his visit to New Zealand, here to act as swinger for world sidecar champion Tim Reeves as they compete in the Suzuki Series.

However, after a great first two weeks, it has unfortunately taken a turn for the worse … when he was out on a road bike a week ago, he was involved in an accident and has been hospitalised since.

He has multiple fractures to his neck and his left femur. But has no loss of feeling at all.

On Tuesday his femur was pinned and the doctors are very happy with the result.

And has also had a neck operation. He has six broken vertebra, two of which have had to be fused, but the doctors are happy with the outcome.

He now has a longer stay in New Zealand and a long road to recovery.

He has been unbelievably strong and in good spirits all week.
