GIBBS FEELING STRONG
KTM Motocross Racing Team’s Kirk Gibbs is ready to perform, as the series heads to his home in South Australia for round four of the Australian MX Nationals next weekend (May 17).
After gaining further experience racing at the South Australian Motocross titles at Murray Bridge last weekend, Gibbs will head to round four holding the MX1 class red plate, and will be looking to further extend his national championship lead.
For Gibbs, this is the first time appearing at Murray Bridge leading the MX1 championship, and he says he’s looking forward to attempting to back up his Murray Bridge win from last year on home soil.
“I feel good about heading to round four, I actually raced a state title there on the weekend which was good to get some more experience. We’re in a good position at the moment, and I’m excited to get home,” he said.
“I don’t feel like I’ve rode Murray Bridge more than anyone else – I did a bit of riding there back in the junior days, but since turning senior I have pretty much raced there when everyone else has.
“I sort of grew up on soil similar to Murray Bridge though, so in saying that I feel comfortable there, and I’m looking forward to heading back.
“I don’t feel any pressure heading to my home round leading the championship. I do have a target on my back but I just want to go about my racing as I have been every other weekend and just do my best.”
For Gibbs, the support of family and friends will be welcomed at round four, and he shared his excitement at the prospect of performing in front of his home crowd come May 17.
“It’s really cool to head home and catch up with people that I haven’t seen for a long time, and it does help to have that extra support,” he said.
“Although I don’t get to spend a lot of time with everyone on race day, it’s definitely cool to have my family and friends there to support me.
“I learned after Broadford that I need to ride a little bit smarter and stop taking risks, so my aim for round four is just to stay consistent, and finish my home round on the box.”
