THE ART OF MOTOCROSS
On Friday, January 9, KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey and his young bride Lindsey set foot in the state of Arizona.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport welcomed a pleiad of star guests; the stars for the AMA Supercross were expected at the Chase Field stadium for the second round of the new championship.
A healthy dose of adrenaline pumps through the veins of the multiple champion who knows like no other to hide his emotions. Just like it is with wild animals who can see each other from afar, Dungey’s nostrils open a bit wider when he steps into the SX arena for a first sightseeing on the Arizona Diamondbacks’ territory.
Like rutting, dominant bison bulls defining their territory on the North American plains fight for their lives in a battle for the best cow, each square meter in the stadium is observed and memorised.
Inside, the dirt bike heroes roar and are mentally ready to smash each others’ heads. Winning is the only thing that matters even in the civilized world of AMA Supercross.

The stands are filled to the top row and there is no second of rest left. “RD” say the elegant white leather letters on the butt patch of Dungey’s ocean blue/orange outfit when he leaves the KTM RedBull race truck’s secure area and walks slowly to the stadium. The noise gets louder as he enters the triangular in-field.
The open roof gives full play to the produced decibels. It looks like if Ryan left his body cause nothing and nobody can bring him out of his concentration. A quick view on the track before the “Main Event” brings some peace of mind to the 26 years old young man from Minnesota.
The sound of the heavy power sources wins the battle with the loud cheering fans when the speaker announces the “450 Final” of the evening and the powerful SX warriors take their place in the spotlights.
The point of no return
Only a few seconds are left to pray to God that the race can be carried out safely, the last words of the quick prayer don’t even get the chance to leave the stadium. The gate drops on the clay soil like an exhausted bison who has lost the battle for dominance. The black studded tyres do the job…. Read the whole story in the printed edition “The Art of Motocross”.
