MORE RECORDS IN HIS SIGHTS
Perhaps the records will continue to fall under the wheels of rising young Waikato motocross star Josiah Natzke.
The 15-year-old from Hamilton became the youngest ever senior national motocross champion in March when he wrapped up the 125cc class title and now, as he builds towards the 2015 season at the next level of competition, racing the MX2 (250cc) class on the bigger KTM250, it seems the teenage juggernaut is still on a roll.
The CMR Red Bull KTM Team rider stunned the MX2 class at the season-opening MX Fest at Taupo over Labour Weekend, heading off talented riders such as former world No.2 and former Australian and New Zealand champion Josh Coppins, of Motueka, as he stormed to the top of the podium.
Natzke won three of his five outings at the weekend, perhaps the most spectacular was when he won the opening MX2 class race of the day and crossing the finish line 9.4 seconds ahead of local hero Cameron Dillon (Huka Honda), Coppins (Altherm JCR Yamaha race team), Tauranga’s Aaron Wiltshier (The Honda Shop Racing Team), Oamaru’s Joel Meikle (Oamaru Honda) and Rotorua’s Scotty Canham (Patterson-O’Connor BikesportNZ.com Kawasaki).
That set the tone for the rest of the day, with Natzke the man everyone wanted to beat.
In the end, Natzke finished comfortably ahead of Coppins, Dillon and Canham, with Dunedin’s Campbell King (Bel Ray Pro Rider Suzuki Team) rounding out the top five.
“Of course I wanted to do well today, but actually pulling off the win was icing on the cake,” said Natzke. “I’m definitely stoked with that.
“It’s a thrill to beat Josh because he’s always been one of my idols. Guys like him and Ben Townley are people I look up to.
“I just hope that I can go on and achieve like that have in the sport.”
The next race for Natzke is to contest the Waikato Motocross Championships between Otorohanga and Te Kuiti next weekend, followed by the Auckland Motocross Championships, the Whakatane Summercross and the New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville in January.
The four-round New Zealand Motocross Championships kick off in New Plymouth in February.
