AUSTRALIAN SX ROUNDS 4 AND 5
Although he was in hot form following his stunning rides for Team Australia at the Motocross of Nations in Germany two weeks ago, Kawasaki’s Brett Metcalfe was still forced to bow to Honda riders Weston Peick and Gavin Faith at round four of the Terex Australian Supercross Championship at the weekend.
Peick won the 20-lap Pro Open final ahead of Suzuki rider Josh Hill and Metcalfe, who was competing in his first event on Australian soil in seven years (he is pictured above racing at the Motocross of Nations in Germany, where he helped Australia to qualify first and then finish fourth overall).
The race for the Pro Open title blew wide open with Suzuki rider Matt Moss and KTM rider Daniel McCoy both involved in a spectacular multi-rider crash on the opening lap.
Peick was mid pack off the start, but worked his way to the front in the early stages of the race, lapping consistently to take the win.
The 2013 format saw two rounds of the national Supercross championship and three rounds of the inaugural Australian Women’s Supercross Championship contested over three days on the purpose-built track at Lukey Heights.
After settling for runner-up spot at round four, Hill then struck back to win round five’s Pro Open final the following day, ahead of Matt Moss and his team-mate Sam Martin.
Hill holeshot the 20-lap final and led the race from start to finish, greeting the chequered flag over four seconds ahead of Moss.
Jake Moss battled a gastro virus throughout Sunday and finished the race fourth while Brett Metcalfe crashed on the opening lap and was forced to the sidelines.
Hill’s victory sees him take a five point lead in the Pro Open championship over Matt Moss with Jake Moss sitting third a further two points behind.
