ON THE GP START LINE
New Zealanders should have special interest in this weekend’s Germany Motocross Grand Prix.
Rotorua’s Johnny Phillips will be on the start line at the Lausitzring circuit.
“It will be a month since I last raced, but in that time I have worked on the areas that I struggled with at the Sweden GP,” said Phillips.
“This week has been especially hot, and it looks like it is going to get even hotter this weekend in Germany with temperatures in the high 30’s.
“The goal this weekend is to get my first GP points.
“From the German GP we – that is Cam, my mechanic and I – will spend the week on the road and make our way to the Czech GP that I am also racing.
“Rex Michau, my Dirtbike-Gym Honda race team owner, has brought me a new engine which coincidentally is being built by a Kiwi living over here, Glenn Woodman. I’m really excited to race it.
“Cam, my mechanic, has been working super hard to make sure we are all set for the weekend. I’m surprised his fingers are not bleeding.
“I have to say a big thank you to the Rotorua Motorcycle Club for sponsoring my entry this weekend. Also I want to thank Monique at Motorcycling New Zealand for sorting all of my license stuff out.
“The next two months are really full on with GPs, the Belgiam Championships, and Dutch championships … we only get one weekend off!
“I’m a bit gutted to be missing the Super Rugby semi-finals and finals. Cam and I are both huge Chiefs fans and have been streaming almost every game since we have been here. I’m confident the boys can do it again.”
