COOPER SHOWS PACE
An eighth and a first placing earned Kiwi MX1 champion Cody Cooper another podium position in the Australian Motocross Championships at the weekend.
After winning the previous round at Conondale, Suzuki’s Cooper had hopes that momentum would favour him at round six at Appin, NSW, on Sunday and his efforts were enough to give him second spot overall for the day, behind round winner and fellow Suzuki star Matt Moss.
The result keeps Mount Maunganui’s Cooper at fourth in the open class title chase, behind KTM’s Todd Waters – who was recovering from injury but still managed 10th overall on Sunday – No.2 man Moss and Scotsman Billy MacKenzie (Yamaha).
“My day started off good in winning the Superpole, but it was a little up and down during the motos,” Cooper said.
“It was a good day all in all though for the whole Motul Pirelli Suzuki team and I’m really happy with the result overall. I felt really good in moto two and I was able to race to the victory.”
“It was another great result for the team and we couldn’t be happier,” Motul Pirelli Suzuki Team manager Jay Foreman said.
“Matt really took advantage of a recent trip to America and his speed is exceptional, while Cody again proved in moto two that when he puts the pieces of the puzzle together he’s a very difficult rider to beat. These results bode well for the final four rounds of the season.”
In the MX2 class, Yamaha’s Luke Styke extended his series lead with another commanding performance, while Kiwi rider Rhys Carter (Suzuki) managed fifth overall on the day to lift himself from 12th to 10th in the MX2 standings.
Fellow Kiwi Kayne Lamont (KTM) had a mixed day, finishing 11th in moto one but out of the points in moto two. He has slipped one spot to 11th in the standings.
In the MX Development (under-19) class, New Zealand’s Hamish Harwood (KTM) (pictured here) rules the roost.
Fellow Kiwi Logan Blackburn (Yamaha) is ninth overall in this class.
