TREASURE TROVE
The BikesportNZ.com photo archive is a treasure trove of classic old snaps.
We have decided that each week we are going to run an archive photo or two – a bit of a guessing game for you. See if you can answer the questions about BOTH photos.
We’ll offer you a few clues, but we also want to keep you guessing.
Check back and we’ll give you the answers next week, along with our next “Who’s that?” feature photos.
Crown Kiwi – EVS – 100%
Plus, we have a sponsor for the feature. Thanks to Crown Kiwi, EVS and 100% apparel and accessories, we can offer a small prize each week – a tee-shirt or a cap – to the first respondent with the correct answers.
Anyway, it seems our competition was a bit tough last week because nobody could answer BOTH questions.
So, we have given the prize for last week’s quiz to Sloan Frost. He came closest by correctly naming two of the four riders in the motocross photo and he also correctly identified both the two road-racers. Probably should have expected that from Sloan, seeing as his racing career has traversed both bike codes.
Thumbs up to Ronnie Towler, who (unsurprisingly really) named all four motocross dudes but he didn’t offer an answer about the road bike guys.
We have had a few comments from the “Tar Babies” that they can’t answer the questions about the “Dust Bunnies” and vice versa. So, this week well have made the contest a lot easier, for the dirt bike community anyway. Should be plenty of correct answers to questions about these two photos.
Next week we’ll go easy on the tarseal boys.
Clues for photo above:
This photo was taken during the New Zealand Motocross Championships in 1987. A big clue to that is the December 1986 issue of Kiwi Rider magazine that one of the men is holding. Can you name all three riders please?
But we do also need you to answer the questions about the photo below.
Clues for photo below:
This photo shows a Honda rider from Hawke’s Bay, on his way to winning the Roddy Shirriffs Memorial Trophy at the annual Woodville Motocross in 1985. His nickname was ‘Willis’. Who is it?
Last week’s characters revealed:
The main photo displayed last week was taken at the North Island Junior Motocross Championships at Taihape in 1985 and just a week or so later one of these riders, Darryll King (pictured top, left), was competing on a Honda CR500 against the top open class riders of the day at the annual Johnny Old Memorial Motocross near Levin. Again asked you to identify just three of the four riders pictured and only a couple of people could name all four.
The riders were (from top, left) Darryll King, Shayne King, Alec McIvor and (bottom left) Ronnie Towler.
The second photo showed a 600cc Suzuki rider getting into all sorts of trouble. Actually, it wasn’t just any 600cc Suzuki rider but the current national 600cc supersport champion Dennis Charlett.
The other rider in the photo (bike No.79), probably unaware of the drama unfolding behind him, was Greg Percival.
Well done to those who emailed us with their answers last week.
Email your answers to this week’s quiz to contest@bikesportnz.com
Note: Be careful to answer the questions being asked. We may ask for a time, a place, an event or ask for one or several of the individuals in the two photos to be identified.
