WHO IS THAT?
The BikesportNZ.com photo archive is a treasure trove of classic old snaps.
We have decided that each week we are going to run an archive photo or two – a bit of a guessing game for you. See if you can answer the questions about BOTH photos.
We’ll offer you a few clues, but we also want to keep you guessing.
Check back and we’ll give you the answers next week, along with our next “Who’s that?” feature photos.
Crown Kiwi – EVS – 100%
Plus, we have a sponsor for the feature. Thanks to Crown Kiwi, EVS and 100% apparel and accessories, we can offer a small prize each week – a tee-shirt or a cap – to the first respondent with the correct answers.
Last week’s quiz winner was Maureen Watts, who correctly named three of the four riders in the motocross photo and also correctly identified the road-racer.
Clues for photo above:
This photo was taken at the North Island Junior Motocross Championships at Taihape and just a week or so later one of these riders was competing on a Honda CR500 against the top open class riders of the day at the annual Johnny Old Memorial Motocross near Levin. Again this week we want you to identify just three of the four riders pictured. If you can name all four, that will be so much more impressive, but not a requirement for this little quiz.
But we do also need you to answer the questions about the photo below.
Clues for photo below:
This photo shows a 600cc Suzuki rider getting into all sorts of trouble. You shouldn’t have too much trouble naming this character on bike No.82 because he’s still a top man in the 600cc class, but see if you can tell us who is on bike No.79 as well.
Last week’s characters revealed:
The main photo displayed last week was taken at round one of the New Zealand Motocross Championships at QEII Park, just north of Wellington, in November 1985.
Arhh, 1985, those were the days … the big, crackling 500cc two-strokes.
No.1 on the Kawasaki is, of course the 1984 500cc champion Bryan Patterson, of Rotorua. The Kawasaki with the letter M is British former Grand Prix rider Pete Mathia. No.6 on the Kawasaki is Tokoroa’s Tony Livingstone and the letter D on the Yamaha is Australian visitor James Deakin.
The 500cc title was eventually won that season by Stokes Valley’s Murray Anderson, with Patterson settling for runner-up and Mathia finishing third. Deakin wound up seventh overall and Livingstone finished eighth.
The second photo was taken at Manfeild and shows a young Craig Shirriffs, at the time a rising star in the 600cc class and riding in leathers borrowed from Kiwi superbike ace Simon Crafar.
Well done to those who emailed us with their answers last week.
Email your answers to this week’s quiz to contest@bikesportnz.com
Note: Be careful to answer the questions being asked. We may ask for a time, a place, an event or ask for one or several of the individuals in the two photos to be identified.

Meanwhile, we tracked down a couple of video clips of Pete Mathia. Below is a video clip from a Twinshock Pirates race from the Kendal Classic Nostalgia Scramble at Holme Farm Middleton Cumbria in August 2008. The riders to watch out for here are Richard Charlton (CCM), Walter Bickmore (490 Maico), Paul Chiappa (490 Maico), Gary Parker (HPF Honda), Pete Mathia (490 Maico) and Mark Sylvester (490 Maico).
This second video clip (below) is from the Vets Des Nations weekend at Farleigh Castle on September 18, 2010. This is the first International race from the Saturday’s race programme. Look out for names such as Werner DeWitt (Suzuki No.12, a former team-mate of Kiwi Josh Coppins), Neil Prince (No.1), Pete Mathia (No.3), Paul Chiappa (No.19) and Brian Wheeler.
