THE REAL CANTERBURY CRUSADERS
It was a big weekend for Canterbury riders at the fifth and final round of the New Zealand Superbike Championships in Taupo.
Christchurch’s Dennis Charlett (pictured) successfully defended his national 600cc supersport title with a race to spare on Sunday and then went out and won the final race of the series for good measure.
Rangiora’s Jake Lewis won the parallel 600cc superstock crown and Christchurch’s Robbie Stokes won the ProTwin 650 class, ahead of Ashburton’s Brian Hill, while Christchurch’s Seth Devereux won the 125GP title and also finished runner-up in the Prolites 250 class.
In addition, the glamour superbikes title was won by Australian Robbie Bugden, riding for the Christchurch-based Red Fenton-managed Triple R Suzuki team.
In all, Canterbury riders featured well in all seven bike divisions and won titles in four of them with stand-out performances also from the likes of Nick Cain, Matthew Hoogenboezem, Alastair Hoogenboezem, James Hoogenboezem, Daniel Ornsby, James Smith and John Ross during the five-round series.
