Youthstream president Giuseppe Luongo and former GP motocross star and event promoter Eric Geboers, representing GP Limburg, have signed a contract for the 2012 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations to be held in Lommel, Belgium, in September 2012.
The actual date will be announced by the FIM when they publish the provisional 2012 FIM Motocross World Championship calendar.
Geboers is a multi-time former world motocross champion – the original “Mr 875” as winner of world 125, 250 and 500 titles – who was affectionately known in his racing days as “The Kid”, and he was the man behind the hugely-popular GP events staged at Namur, the course running around the battlements of an ancient stone castle.
BikesportNZ.com staff were at Namur for one of the last GPs ever staged there and know that Geboers is a perfectionist and that nothing less than the best will do when it comes to promoting and presenting motocross.
Add to that the fact that Belgian nation has long been one of the leading countries at this “Olympic Games of Motocross” and you have a recipe for a splendid weekend of racing.
Lommel is not like Namur, far from it, with the course a fearsome sand trap and perhaps this will play into the hands of the host nation’s riders and, of course, the Dutch riders too.
This year’s Motocross of Nations is yet to be staged, at St Jean d’Angeley in south-western France, but already we’re looking ahead to 2012 and Lommel.
